Top tips for glamorous plus size brides

Every bride wants to look her best on her wedding day – and shape or size should not be a barrier to looking absolutely fabulous…There are bridal boutiques that specialise in plus size wedding dresses. But most boutiques will not hold stock of larger size samples so always ask before you make an appointment.

Ideally if you have the budget having a couture wedding dress made to fit will give you a lot more options. If you do go down this route choose a designer who you can rely on to listen to your ideas. Also remember you will need to undress for the fittings so make sure you feel comfortable in this situation.

There are a few tricks of the trade that will ensure you look your best on your special day. My tips for finding a flattering plus size dress:

1. An A-line dress is a safe choice especially if it is a high waisted empire line style that starts from under the bust and immediately flares out giving discreet coverage.

2. A drop waist can also work. This will accentuate your shape helping to create curves. Plus size brides often think they don’t have a waist but a long bodice can create a waist. The fullness at the bottom of the dress will accentuate hips in a flattering way.

3. Ball gowns will make you feel like a princess, choose one that highlights the most slender area of your body. Most ball gowns have a built in corset that will automatically shape your body creating a smaller waist and bigger bust. It will also offer good support so you won’t have to worry about finding the correct under garments.

4. Mermaid or Trumpet shaped wedding dresses are very popular but you will need to love your body shape to feel confident to wear a figure hugging style that will accentuate your bottom. If you would like a mermaid shape dress, I suggest having it made because fit is crucial and it needs to flair out just above the knee otherwise you won’t be able to walk down the aisle or dance in the evening.

5. A high neck is stylish and easy to wear. Avoid strapless dresses if you have a full bust and don’t want to spend your wedding day hoisting your dress up!

6. Asymmetric detail is very flattering. An angled hemline or asymmetric ruching gathered down one side of the dress is very forgiving as this draws the eye down towards the hem and puts the spotlight on your legs.

7. If you are buying an off the peg dress choose the size that fits your larger measurement and have it altered to fit – nothing looks worse than a dress that is too tight no matter what your dress size.
